Honor Is Preparing a New Foldable Phone for January, and Samsung and Apple Should Pay Attention

Honor Is Preparing a New Foldable Phone

Honor already knows how to make a foldable phone. The Magic V6 is one of the thinnest models in the category, packs a 6,660mAh battery and opens to a 7.95-inch display.

The next Honor move could be more interesting than another Magic V update.

VietnamNet reports that Chinese tipster Smart Pikachu has pointed to January 2027 for the launch. Earlier leaks had only placed the phone somewhere in the first half of next year.

Honor has not confirmed the device, so January should still be treated as a leak rather than a launch date written into the calendar.

The New Honor Phone Could Look Very Different From the Magic V6

The current Honor Magic V6 uses a 6.52-inch outer display and opens to a much larger 7.95-inch screen. Honor also made the phone remarkably thin, measuring 8.75mm when folded on the lightest version.

The rumored model goes shorter and wider. Leaks point to a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner screen.

Those numbers are almost identical to the latest Samsung foldable.

Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main screen. The inner display opens to a 4:3 ratio, giving the phone a much squarer shape than older narrow foldables.

Apple went in nearly the same direction.

The iPhone Duo, announced on September 9, uses a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says the outer screen is close to passport size when the phone is closed.

Honor now appears to be building around almost the same dimensions.

That Similarity Is Probably Not an Accident

For years, foldable phones were easy to recognize even when closed. Many were tall, narrow and awkward compared with a normal smartphone.

The new generation is starting to look less like a phone stretched vertically and more like a compact tablet folded in half.

Samsung has already committed to that idea with the Galaxy Z Fold8. Apple picked almost the same inner display size for its first foldable. If the Honor leak is accurate, three major manufacturers will soon be building premium foldables around a very similar footprint.

That tells us more about the next year of foldable phones than another processor upgrade ever could. Manufacturers are starting to agree on how these devices should feel in the hand.

A Battery Over 7,000mAh Would Give Honor a Serious Advantage

The screen dimensions are only part of the leak. The rumored battery is far more aggressive.

Reports from China point to a capacity above 7,000mAh. Honor has already demonstrated that the number is realistic rather than fantasy.

The current Honor Magic V6 carries a 6,660mAh silicon-carbon battery despite its slim body. Honor also used Mobile World Congress 2026 to demonstrate new battery technology designed to move foldable phones past the 7,000mAh mark.

If the company can put that capacity into a smaller wide foldable without making it unusually thick or heavy, Samsung and Apple will have a very obvious specification to answer.

Samsung gives the Galaxy Z Fold8 a 4,800mAh battery. Apple has not published a simple mAh figure for the iPhone Duo, preferring to quote battery-life performance instead.

The Camera Rumor Is Just as Ambitious

Honor is also rumored to be testing a 200MP main camera alongside a periscope telephoto system.

Camera hardware has long been one of the compromises buyers expect when moving from a conventional flagship to a foldable. The limited internal space has to accommodate two screens, a hinge and a large battery before the camera system even enters the equation.

A 200MP sensor would not automatically make Honor the best foldable camera phone. Sensor size, lenses, image processing and stabilization will decide far more than the megapixel count alone.

Still, pairing a large battery with a high-end telephoto system would make the phone look more like a full flagship than a design experiment.

The Snapdragon Rumor Needs More Caution

Some leaks have also mentioned a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip.

That name should be treated carefully because Qualcomm has not announced the final consumer platform expected to power early 2027 flagships. Prototype hardware can also change months before a phone reaches production.

The current Magic V6 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, so another top Qualcomm platform in the next Honor foldable would hardly be surprising. The exact chip name is simply too early to lock down.

Could Honor Really Rival Samsung and Apple?

On hardware, yes.

Honor already has enough experience with thin foldables, large silicon-carbon batteries and periscope cameras to make the leaked specifications believable. The Magic V6 proves that the company can fit a very large battery into a body under 9mm thick when closed.

The harder part is everything around the phone.

Samsung has years of foldable software development behind the Galaxy Z Fold line. Apple controls both the hardware and iOS experience on the iPhone Duo and will bring a huge developer base with it. Honor has to make the wider screen useful after the excitement over the hardware fades.

Price will also decide how serious the competition becomes. A rumored CNY 9,999 starting point could put Honor below some premium rivals in China, but global pricing and availability remain unknown.

January could give us the first real answer.

If Honor launches a 7.6-inch wide foldable with a battery above 7,000mAh, a 200MP camera and flagship Qualcomm hardware, Samsung and Apple will not be dealing with another company copying the foldable idea. They will be dealing with a manufacturer that has already spent years learning how to build one.
