Maye Musk Praises Elon, Unlike His Father, Who Wanted Credit for His Success

When Maye Musk visits her billionaire son in Texas, she does not necessarily get a billionaire guest room.

Sometimes she sleeps in the garage.

At 78, the model, dietitian and mother of Elon Musk does not seem particularly bothered by the arrangement.

During visits to Starbase, the SpaceX city in South Texas, she has stayed in a converted garage and described the setup as a luxury compared with the camping trips of her childhood in the Kalahari Desert.

The unusual sleeping arrangement resurfaced this week as Maye discussed life at Starbase while promoting her new memoir.

It is a wonderfully odd Musk family detail. One of the richest men alive has his mother over, and Mom ends up in the garage.

Maye tells the story with affection rather than complaint. That tone runs through almost everything she says about Elon. She does not pretend he was an ordinary child, and she certainly does not pretend to be an impartial observer now.

Maye Musk Says She Saw Something Different Very Early

One of the stories receiving the most attention from Maye latest round of interviews goes all the way back to Elon’s preschool years.

She says she had decided by the time he was three that he was unusually intelligent. Her reason was not that he was building rockets in the living room. It was much more mundane.

He argued with her logically.

Maye recalled discussing purchases with her young son and hearing him suggest less expensive ways to buy things. The reasoning surprised her because she did not expect it from a three-year-old. In her telling, that was when she first began thinking there was something unusual about the way his mind worked. She recently revisited those childhood memories in an interview tied to her new book.

She also remembers a child who could disappear into books and retain huge amounts of information. Social life came less easily. His siblings Kimbal and Tosca made friends more naturally, while Elon could become absorbed in reading, computers and whatever problem had caught his attention.

Maye does not tell those stories as evidence that she predicted Tesla or SpaceX. She could see that her son was bright. She could not know where that would lead.

Decades later, we already know the answer. Elon built a business empire and became the richest person in the world.

She Is Not Trying to Sound Neutral

Maye has become increasingly willing to push back when she thinks her son is being treated unfairly.

During her recent Telegraph interview, she quickly made clear that she notices which publications are friendly toward Elon and which are not. Her support is not hidden behind the language of a detached celebrity parent.

Earlier this year, she described motherhood as the greatest joy in her life and said she tries not to pressure her three children or her grandchildren. Her parenting philosophy, as she explained in a Mother’s Day interview, is built around giving family members room to make their own choices.

That helps explain the way she talks about Elon now.

Maye praises his intelligence and work, worries when he comes under attack, and prefers talking about the boy she raised rather than explaining every controversy surrounding the adult Elon Musk.

Maye Musk Has Never Needed Her Son’s Career to Stay Busy

Maye began modeling when she was 15, built a parallel career in nutrition and earned graduate degrees in dietetics and nutritional science. Her modeling career became more visible with age rather than fading away.

At 69, she became a CoverGirl spokesmodel. At 74, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, then the oldest woman ever to do so.

Her newest book, Timeless, The Art of Reinvention and Resilience at Any Age, was released in September 2026. The memoir is built around repeated reinvention, including raising three children as a single mother, rebuilding her professional life after major moves and continuing to work well past the age when people expected her to slow down.

Maye grew up traveling through southern Africa with parents who took their children on long desert expeditions. Later came divorce, single parenthood, international moves and years of rebuilding her work from one city to another.

A bed beside a rocket company does not sound especially intimidating after all that.

Then There Is Elon’s Father

The way Maye talks about Elon’s success becomes more interesting when placed beside the version told by his father, Errol Musk.

Errol has been far more eager to insert himself into the origin story.

In a 2026 interview, he took credit for funding Zip2, the company Elon and Kimbal started in the 1990s. Errol has also spent years discussing money he made from emeralds and the financial comfort he says his family enjoyed when Elon was young.

That famous emerald story is more complicated than the internet version usually suggests.

According to Walter Isaacson, Errol exchanged an airplane for a share of emerald production from small operations in Zambia. He sold gems for significant sums, but Isaacson found that little of that money reached Elon and his siblings.

There was some later financial help.

The New Yorker reported that Errol contributed about $28,000 to Zip2 after the business had already started. Elon has argued that the money arrived during a later funding round that would have happened without it.

The history of the Zip2 investment therefore leaves room for a much less dramatic conclusion than either “Elon got nothing” or “the emeralds created his fortune.”

Errol clearly believes his role deserves recognition. Elon, on the other hand, thinks that role has been overstated.

Father and Son Do Agree on One Thing

They have had a difficult relationship.

Elon spoke unusually bluntly about his father in a 2017 Rolling Stone interview, saying that choosing to live with Errol as a boy had been a mistake. He described him as a terrible person and said years of attempts to repair the relationship had failed. The original account of their relationship remains one of Elon’s most personal interviews.

Errol does not describe fatherhood in especially sentimental language either.

In an August 2026 interview, he discussed the severe school bullying Elon suffered as a child and defended his own hard response. He also described their relationship as intermittent and rejected parts of the way Elon and his biographers have portrayed him. The recent Errol Musk interview on fatherhood made the distance between the two men difficult to miss.

And yet Errol will also praise his son. In the new documentary Musk, he reportedly ends his appearance with a simple warning to anyone betting against Elon. Do not do it. You will lose.

Maye Tells a Different Kind of Story

The difference between Maye and Errol is not really about who loves Elon more. It is about what each of them chooses to emphasize when they talk about his rise.

Errol has repeatedly pointed to his money, the emerald business and the financial help he says he provided when Elon and Kimbal were starting out. Elon has pushed back on that version for years, especially on the idea that family wealth explains what came later.

Maye takes a different route. She talks about the child she remembers, his reading, his memory, his awkwardness around other kids and the way he could become completely absorbed in whatever interested him.

That does not make her account more objective. She is his mother, and she is openly proud of him.

But it does make her version simpler.

Errol has spent years arguing about how much credit belongs to him. Maye seems far less interested in claiming any of it.
