Dear residents of the 13th Ward,
My name is Bob Reuer and I am running to represent the 13th Ward on the Minneapolis City Council. Recently, the Southwest Journal printed an article about my criminal history, “Convicted Felon Campaigning for Ward 13 City Council Seat, 9/13/13.” I have always been forthcoming and honest about my past. I made some bad decisions when I was younger and I have paid the price ever since.
I know firsthand what it is like to hit rock-bottom and I also know what it feels like to turn things around. The past 15 years of my life have been dedicated to repaying the City for the opportunities I have had to better myself, my family, and my community. Now, I am asking you to give me the opportunity to apply those lessons to City Government.
On Nov. 5 each of you will have the opportunity to make a clear choice regarding the future of our City. This is not a simple choice between political parties, political philosophies, or even special interests. It is more fundamental than that. It is a choice that hinges on one question; are you satisfied with the direction we are headed as a city or do you want to turn things around?
— Are you satisfied with years of property tax increases and a reliance on State Aid to Local Governments to pay for basic services like Police, Fire, and Public Works?
— Are you satisfied with a public school system that is failing our children, expediting the gentrification of the City, and refusing to address the underlying causes of the achievement gap for minority students?
— Are you satisfied that our City Council is as concerned with the issues of the 13th Ward as those involving Downtown businesses or the future of feral cats?
— Are you satisfied when your Chief of Police thinks the highest priorities for a “Summer Crime Reduction Strategy” are patrolling alleys to catch scrappers, disbanding our SWAT Team and putting them on foot beats, and increasing bike patrols Downtown?
— Are you satisfied when violent crime Citywide is up 14% over the last two years, when violent crime on the Northside is up 35% over the last two years, when overall crime in the 5th Precinct (SW Minneapolis) is up 3% over the last two years, and when both arrests and proactive stops are down year-to-date?
— Are you satisfied when the City Council and Mayor are more concerned with supporting new stadiums than they are with paving roads, filling potholes, replacing infrastructure, and adequately funding the basic services we all expect?
Having lived in the community for over 50 years, I have seen our City heading the wrong direction. That is why I am running for City Council — I care deeply about the 13th Ward! I want to end wasteful spending, adequately fund basic services, and streamline the City’s regulatory services.
I am not asking for campaign contributions, I am asking for your vote. If you are already dedicated to another candidate, I just ask that you make me your second choice. I can’t address these issues without your support.
