EAST HARRIET — A meet-and-greet with Clara Barton Open School’s new principal, Jonas Beugen, is scheduled for Monday evening.
Beugen most recently served as principal of Osseo Area Learning Center, an alternative high school in the northwest metro school district. His 19 years of experience in education also include seven years as a principal in Northeast Metro Intermediate School District 916, a year on the Robbinsdale school board and experience as a high school social studies teacher and basketball coach, according to a letter to parents posted on the Barton website.
Located at 4237 Colfax Ave. S., Barton is a K–8 magnet school with a curriculum based on the open education philosophy. When classes start later this month, Beugen will be the school’s fourth principal in the last five years.
Beugen replaces former principal Paul Scanlon, whose tenure at Barton lasted just one school year. Scanlon followed Patrick Duffy, a former Barton principal who led the school for two years before accepting a leadership position with St. Paul Public Schools.
Prior to Duffy, Steve DeLapp served as Barton principal for 20 years. When he retired from the position in 2012, he was the district’s longest-tenured principal.
The meet-and-greet event runs 5 p.m.–8 p.m. Monday on the school’s playground. A short presentation on Beugen’s background will be given at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
