EAST HARRIET — Barton Open School Principal Paul Scanlon is resigning his post after just one year at the K–8 magnet school.
Scanlon announced his decision today in a letter to parents posted on the school’s website. He started at the school just last summer.
“As the year concludes, I realize that while we share a vision and commitment to students, our paths are different, and it is in my and Barton’s best interest to continue our work independently,” Scanlon wrote.
Scanlon took over the principal role at Barton from Patrick Duffy, who led the school for two years before leaving for a leadership position at St. Paul Public Schools. Before Duffy, veteran principal Steve DeLapp was in the post at Barton for two decades.
There was some dissatisfaction among Barton parents last summer with the way Scanlon was selected for the job. Parents did not have a chance to meet with Scanlon prior to his being appointed principal of the school by former Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson.
Reached Friday morning, a district spokesman was not immediately able to comment on the situation beyond what was posted on the Barton website.
