Heat cancels classes

School will resume Sept. 3 at campuses without adequate air conditioning

Classes at 27 Minneapolis Public Schools campuses are canceled until Sept. 3 due to extreme heat, the district announced Wednesday afternoon.

Minneapolis is sweating through a late-summer heat wave, and not all district school buildings have air conditioning. Some students and teachers complained little learning was happening in sweltering classrooms.

In Southwest, classes were canceled at Anthony, Anwatin, Armatage, Jefferson, Kenny, Kenwood, Lake Harriet (upper and lower campuses), Loring and Southwest High School. The full list of campus closings was posted on the district’s website: mpls.k12.mn.us/august_28_2.html.

Students will not be required to make up the two missed school days, the district reported.
