Parks Notebook: Park Board candidate Yonis settles appeal

Park Board candidate Yonis settles appeal

Former Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) employee and current at-large Park Board candidate Hashim Yonis has settled a civil appeal filed regarding his termination in August.

The settlement allowed Yonis to resign, rather than leave the record showing that he was fired. A MPRB investigation into Yonis’s actions this summer found that he had illegally pocketed more than $3,800 for soccer field rentals at Currie Park, an allegation Yonis categorically denies.

“I have decided [settling] is the best course for me as it allows me to focus my energy on this historic campaign and my potential election as a Park Board Commissioner,” Yonis wrote in a statement released last week.

Concepts for new MLK Park playground released

Three concepts for the new playground at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park were unveiled on Oct. 8, and are available online at

The three concepts are called “The Mountaintop,” “The Front Porch” and “Unity in Diversity.” Online feedback on the concepts will be taken until Oct. 25.

A final plan will be chosen this winter, construction on the $280,000 project will begin in the spring, and the new playground is scheduled to open by August 2014.

Park Board chosen for solar grant

The Park Board is proposing to put a 150 kiloWatt (kW) solar panel installation on the roof of Parade Ice Garden with a $970,000 grant it recently received from the Xcel Energy Renewable Development fund.

Plans also call for five smaller solar power demonstration installations at high-visibility locations. Annually the project is projected to produce 280,000 kW hours of electricity and offset 400,000 pounds of carbon

The grant requires a $150,000 match from the Park Board and still needs to be approved by the Public Utilities Commission.
