Just two studios remain for rent at Salon Concepts, a new collective of salon owners that work independently and share the space above Flooring Expo at 2801 Hennepin Ave.
Salon Concepts is a business model that came out of Cincinnati 11 years ago, and the chain is opening its 10th location in November. Renee Vermilyea, director of relationships, said rents are comparable to chair rentals at other salons.
“They have a lot more freedom and create their own hours,” she said. “…We help them through the process of starting their own business.”
Mike Miller previously owned Prestige Salon on Broadway in North Minneapolis. He said he’s enjoying less stress and overhead at the new space.
Hairdresser Dean Amundson said he appreciates the layout of individual suites for each stylist.
“I wanted to be in a space without a row of chairs around me — it can be fun camaraderie, but there are a lot of interruptions. Six blow dryers can be going at once,” he said.
Amundson said he also likes the diversity at Salon Concepts among the owners and clientele, as salons often split along racial lines.
“It really attracted me to the whole concept,” he said.
Berrika Wooley said she previously worked at a Knollwood Mall salon that was also very diverse, and said she can do absolutely anyone’s hair.
“I do everyone. It’s my art, my craft,” she said. “…I was ready to be out on my own.”
