Urban Tails Pet Supply is gaining a following for its free playgroups: one for pugs, one for pint-sized dogs, and another “hoppy hour” for bunnies to mingle while the owners drink wine.

The shop makes deliveries for no extra charge and stocks holistic natural foods at 2106 Lyndale Ave. S.

“We don’t carry any food you’d find in mass merchants,” said Barry Flamm, who owns the shop with his wife Colleen.

Much like the healthy food movement for people, pet owners are increasingly gravitating toward fresh, U.S.-made pet food, Flamm said. The food costs more, he said, but animals consume less of it, live longer, and stay healthier as a result of the nutrition.

The shop routinely hosts monthly nail trim clinics, vaccine clinics, pet adoption events and dog training.

The store is also home to rescue cats like Archie, who was discovered in the middle of the road weighing a single pound.

The shop opened in the summer of 2013 when Urbanimal went out of business. A pet shop has occupied the space for the past 20 years, Barry said.

“We spend so much time here, it feels like home,” he said.
