Yard sales and thrift shops have become more than a hobby for owners of the new occasional shop Your Lucky Day.
“It’s a tremendous amount of work, but we both really love it,” said co-owner Kristi Pohl. “We tease each other that we’ve been training to do this all our lives.”
Friends Pohl and Joanne Heider try to load the shop with merchandise people once saw in their aunt’s apartments — anything from plants and pottery to chairs and china. Each sale is four days, and items are priced to clear out.
Your Lucky Day transforms with new merchandise for each of its monthly sales. In August, the store will celebrate Julia Child’s birthday, playing old cooking shows and raffling off a vintage copy of Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”
The women already have plenty of experience in entrepreneurship and retail: Pohl and her husband own A.C.E.S. Flight Simulation at the Mall of America. Co-owner Joanne Heider and her husband own Royal Grounds, located a few steps from Your Lucky Day. Pohl previously worked as a buyer at Target, and Heider worked at Nordstrom.
The owners envision hosting classes, workshops, and perhaps a Downton Abbey launch party, with tables set to recall the period.
“This is almost like our dream job,” Pohl said. “We’re having a blast, and we plan to be around for a long time.”
The August sale dates are Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at 4159 Grand Ave. S.
