Birdhouse bids farewell to Hennepin

EAST ISLES — Stewart and Heidi Woodman closed Birdhouse in June at 25th & Hennepin, thanking customers who dined there over the past year.

The closure comes two months after the restaurateurs settled litigation related to the 2010 fire at 50th & Bryant, the former location of the Woodman’s restaurant Heidi’s.

Insurance companies seeking reimbursement for their payouts initiated the lawsuit, and plaintiffs included Patina and Blackbird. The 2010 incident started as a grease fire in Heidi’s kitchen, and the lawsuit alleged that the Woodmans failed to maintain the restaurant’s fire suppression system.

Heidi’s attorney Jim Knudsen said they spent the last two years sorting out the details, with both sides spending time for investigation and discovery processes. The case was settled on April 18. Details of the settlement are confidential.

The Woodmans did not respond for comment.

The doors remain open at Heidi’s, located at 2903 Lyndale Ave. S. The couple recently catered a VIP reception for Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “In Defense of Food,” who visited the Twin Cities in May.

“We look forward to continuing to see and serve you at Heidi’s,” stated the couple’s announcement on Birdhouse.
