LYN-LAKE — Local designers are pooling rent money to open Showroom this month at 615 W. Lake St.
The store will provide a permanent retail space for independent businesses that make clothing, jewelry, visual art and furniture. A lofted area provides production space for designers and an in-house tailor, with the occasional DJ spinning above the store as well.
“This is a place for people to come in and grow their business,” said Jen Chilstrom, co-designer at Kjurek. Chilstrom previously ran her own fashion label, worked and taught at Old Arizona, and operated galleries across the country.
Chilstrom is cofounding Showroom with Kimberly Jurek, whose Kjurek label has grown into an international brand. When they decided to look for a storefront for Kjurek, they were inspired by cooperative business models and solicited extensive feedback from participating designers.
The shop includes commissioned furniture by the forge and fabrication studio Live Oak Ironworks, Cocoon clothing inspired by Parisian dress, and fair-trade jewelry handmade in Guatemala from Carlos Higueros.
Participating designers can use the space to host events, meet clients, and enjoy cross-promotional help.
“It elevates the way visual artists will be able to show their work,” Chilstrom said.
