FRANCE AVE — Hello Pizza is now open at 3904 Sunnyside Rd., selling pizza by the slice, beer and wine, soft serve and photo booth tickets.
Photo strips from the booth are starting to fill a wall of the shop, and “Hello”-inspired figures dominate the decor. There is a blowup shot of Lionel Richie, and records like “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” The inventor of the “Hello, my name is” nametag — 1959 designer Elmer Krumwiede of Mt. Prospect, Ill. —is framed on a pedestal.
Aside from nametags, the shop is inspired by the New York pizzeria, and staff tout the same attention to “craft, ingredients and grease.” Owner Ann Kim attended college in New York. Before she opened Pizzeria Lola at 5557 Xerxes Ave. S., she originally envisioned opening a New York slice shop.
Her biggest seller thus far is the meat lover’s “Hello Trinity” slice, featuring house-made fennel sausage, natural casing pepperoni and crimini mushrooms. The Korean Cowboy sub is also finding a following from customers who call it a “meatball bahn mi.”
Slices run $3.25-$4.50, and whole 18-inch pies start at $16.
