Morrissey’s Irish Pub opens March 14, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, at 913 W. Lake St.
“For some reason nobody has ever run an Irish bar in Uptown before,” said Paul Crilly, general manager. “We’re excited. We want to become part of the community.”
Crilly’s grandfather is to thank for the bar name. In the early 1920s, he served as commander in the Irish Republican Army, often working on the opposite side of the battle — his alias was Morrissey.
“He’s about as Irish as they come,” Crilly said.
Crilly previously worked as manager of Kieran’s Irish Pub, and he worked many years at O’Donovan’s as well. He is opening the pub with three friends, including Scott Schuler of Red’s Savoy Pizza.
The owners chipped away wall plaster to expose brick behind the bar. They’re opening up the ceiling to reveal the beams overhead, and they’re buffing dark hardwood floors.
Nineteen beers on tap will naturally includeGuinness, Harp and Smithwick’s, along with locals Fulton and Summit.
The kitchen will stay open until 1:30 a.m. every day, serving Irish classics like fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and bangers andmash. It opens at 10 a.m. for brunch on weekends.
Live music will play about four nights a week.
