The Allina Health Isles Clinic at 2800 Hennepin Ave. reports that for several months staff accidentally emptied private patient information into a dumpster, instead of secure shredding bins.
The clinic has no indication that any patient’s personal information was misused, and staff said they believe the risk is low. The documents went into a locked garage, and trash was taken weekly to a city-owned disposal center to be incinerated.
The documents included patient names, dates of birth, addresses, medical records, insurance information and some social security numbers. The improper disposal impacts patients that used the center between April and October 2015.
Allina Health has retrained staff, installed new containers clearly marked for shredding, and offered patients a free year of credit monitoring and identity protection services.
