Police have released an advisory about a possible sexual assault Sunday evening at the Calhoun Square parking ramp, 3001 Hennepin Ave. S.
Police say a woman was found unconscious, partially undressed near her car around 9 p.m. Her car was running at the time.
“She did not remember anything. It is believed she was possibly raped,” police said in the crime alert.
There is no suspect description.
Police said on Thursday that the incident remains under investigation, and said there is a surveillance camera system at the ramp. Police have increased patrol in Uptown, as well as patrol of parking ramps and parking lots.
It’s important to remember that assault survivors are never responsible for their own victimization, said Ellen Gormican, sexual violence program coordinator at Cornerstone Advocacy Service. She said walking in an unpopulated area can make someone appear vulnerable to a perpetrator, although that general advice doesn’t necessarily apply to the recent incident.
“Calhoun Square is a very busy place, and I would imagine that most people would know and assume there are going to be cameras everywhere, and the likelihood of another person walking by is very high,” she said. “Being attacked by someone who is a stranger is a minority of cases. It’s usually about 85 percent of sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone that the victim knows.”
Gormican encouraged people to watch out for each other — if you see someone being followed or see something suspicious, call the police, she said.
“Err on the side of precaution,” she said.
