A man has died from gunshot wounds following a shooting around 4:45 p.m. Monday near Lake & Pleasant Avenue — the second homicide in the 5th Precinct in less than 24 hours, according to Minneapolis Police.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the man as Abdi Liban, 61, of Minneapolis. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police have not arrested a suspect, but believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

This is the fifth homicide in Minneapolis in the past week and 40th for 2015. In 2014 there were 32 homicides.

Chief Janeé Harteau said the cases aren’t “necessarily related,” but gun violence is the common thread.

“This community needs peace. We need people to put the guns down,” she said.

Officers from the 5th Precinct plan to step up patrols in the area and also meet with home and business owners near the 3700 block of 1st Avenue South where another man was shot and killed Sunday night.

“Addressing gun violence is a priority for Mayor Hodges and me,” Harteau said in a statement. “We are looking at all of our resources right now. Many of our suspects in the shootings this year have lengthy criminal histories. They’re not first time offenders in the criminal justice system and we need to find ways to connect those dots, and try to predict and prevent shootings before the next one occurs.”
