Pilot project tests out smartphone parking meter app

The city has launched a new pilot project in the North Loop and Downtown West neighborhoods to test out an app that allows people to pay their parking meters with their smartphones.

Parking stations and meters included in the pilot project are labeled with MPLS Parking App information. The free app is available via the Apple Store and Google Play. Drivers simply enter their parking meter number into the app and pay via their phones.

There is a 15–25 cent fee for each transaction.

The app can also be programmed to send alerts when a parking meter is about to expire.

The pay-by-phone parking system is expected to be rolled out citywide later this fall.
