Police introduce new community liaison

Jennifer Waisanen is the 5th Precinct’s new Crime Prevention Specialist (CPS), and there’s a chance you’ve talked to her before. She started out as a 911 operator, coincidentally working with Amy Lavender, the CPS she’s replacing.

Waisanen has worked in CPS positions throughout Minneapolis since 1999, and she said the 911 experience has come in handy.

“For a lot of people, that’s their first call, and their first experience with dialing it,” she said. “It’s knowing what to say, how to say it, and how to get the response you need.”

Waisanen’s main objective as CPS is to organize more block clubs. Southwest Minneapolis’ 5th Precinct is well covered, but more than 260 blocks still need leaders, she said.

She previously worked in North Minneapolis’ 4th Precinct, where she saw higher rates of crime and drug activity. She spent much of her time dealing with problem properties and nuisance enforcement.

From 2004-06, she also worked as CPS for Sector 1 in the 5th Precinct, helping to organize walking patrols.

Her new Sector 2 and 3 areas include East Harriet, Kingfield, Lyndale, Armatage, Fulton, Kenny, Lynnhurst, Tangletown and Windom.
