Gov. Dayton orders state’s public schools closed Monday because of extreme cold

Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered all Minnesota public schools to close Monday, Jan. 6 because of a forecast predicting dangerously cold temps.

The National Weather Service has issued a forecast showing much of the state will experience the coldest weather in a decade. Low temps are expected to be around minus 30 degrees with wind chills as low as 50 degrees below zero.

“The safety of Minnesota’s schoolchildren must be our first priority,” Dayton said. “I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday. I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions.”
