Police make arrest in fatal hit-and-run

Alleged driver in crash that killed cyclist turned himself in Monday morning

WHITTIER — Minneapolis Police arrested a suspect  five days after a July 3 hit-and-run crash that killed a 20-year-old woman.

Abdirahman Abdi Ali, 24, was arrested at around 10 a.m. Monday after police were able to locate the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and gather more information in the case over the weekend, leading to the identification of Ali. Ali turned himself in to police.

Jessica Hanson was killed after being hit by a vehicle while riding her bike at the intersection of Pleasant Avenue South and West 28th Street at 10:30 p.m. on July 3. Police reported the vehicle that hit Hanson was driving over the speed limit, did not have headlights on and ran through the stop sign at the intersection. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Hanson was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where she died July 5. Ali was being held in Hennepin County Jail on charges of criminal vehicular operation, police reported.
