A couple of days remain to take an online survey on a new playground coming to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 41st & Nicollet. The survey is available thru July 18 at http://bit.ly/18k7p4d, with the survey link located on the bottom left corner of the page.
The playground project will feature an artist’s interpretation of community stories about King, the Civil Rights movement and African American history. The park was originally named Nicollet Field, and it was renamed the year of King’s assassination. The park was one of the first in the nation to hold a public memorial to King.
Artist Ta-coumba Aiken will lead a special playground-related activity at the 14th annual King Park ice cream social on July 18, which runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The night will feature music by Awkward Sorrows, root beer floats and face painting.
July 30 is the first of a series of community meetings on the playground. The 6:30 p.m. meeting will take place at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recreation center at 4055 Nicollet Ave.
Construction of the playground is slated to begin by early 2014, with a grand opening in August of 2014.
