Edina Film Festival calls for poster contest entries

Contest deadline is Aug. 1. Film festival is planned for Nov. 7–9 at Landmark’s Edina Cinema.

50th & FRANCE — The 2013 Edina Film Festival needs an official 2013 poster, and they’re asking Minnesota residents to design it.

For the first time, the annual film fest is inviting local artists to participate in a poster contest, encouraging creative celebration and increased involvement with the event.

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to participate in this event in a different way,” said Kitty O’Dea, Edina Film Festival Committee member. “We hope to get a really great poster, while also engaging the community.”

Minnesota residents age 16 or older are welcome to submit one entry encompassing the theme of cinema and film. All submissions must include the dates and location of the festival.

Minneapolis resident Nancy Carlson will judge the art contest. Carlson is the award-winning author and illustrator of classic children’s books such as “I Like Me”and the “Loudmouth George” series. She will announce the winner on August 19.

The winning artist will receive a $250 prize, along with festival publicity via program guides and other promotional materials. Nine other finalists will have their entries displayed at a location to be announced.

“I think the contest will really raise awareness about the festival in general,” O’Dea said.

Since 2011, the Edina Film Festival has screened over a dozen independent films, many with ties to Minnesota filmmakers. The festival has also shown several short films in the past. Other events at the fest often include discussion sessions with actors or directors from the featured movies.

This year’s official film lineup will be announced Oct. 1, with tickets available for purchase the same day. As usual, all festival proceeds will be donated to benefit the nearby Edina Art Center, a long-established local staple in arts education.

“Every year, we try to make the festival bigger and better,” O’Dea said. “Engaging the community with this poster contest will hopefully bring a lot of interest to [the festival].”

Submissions are due by 7 p.m. on August 5, and must include a $10 fee and a completed registration form. Entries can be turned in to the Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St.
