LYNDALE — The Lyndale Neighborhood Association is now offering free morning ESL classes at Wells Fargo at 31st & Nicollet.
“The classes are having a major impact on students’ lives and are really helping them get involved in the community,” said Mark Hinds, LNA executive director.
Lyndale’s evening ESL classes have served more than 60 students to date. They were initially funded in 2011 with a grant from the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs.
English can be a major community barrier for students, teacher Erica Fulton wrote in the Lyndale Neighborhood News. One woman relied on her husband for any household task requiring English. With the help of the ESL class, she recently handled a furniture delivery independently, and she is thrilled to order food in restaurants.
“Being a part of these bright moments is one of the reasons I’m so excited that LNA can bring more educational opportunities to our community,” Fulton wrote. “Year after year, LNA’s outreach team hears the same request from community members in the neighborhood — ESL classes are needed.”
Morning ESL classes are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the Wells Fargo community room at 3030 Nicollet Ave. The classes run from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Evening ESL classes are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Zion Church, 128 W. 33rd St. Childcare is available as space allows for children ages two and up.
