Three-alarm fire ravages Beek’s Pizza on Lyndale

Neighbors mourn loss of beloved pizza place

Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire that broke out Thursday evening at a building home to Beek’s Pizza and Diamond Lake Rental at 5340 Lyndale Ave. S.

Fire crews responded to the blaze at the one-story building around 6 p.m. All people were out of the building by the time firefighters arrived, according to news release from the Minneapolis Fire Department.

The fire was growing rapidly while firefighters battled it, forcing them to call for additional resources. One firefighter was taken to HCMC after he was injured during a fall. He was treated and released for minor injuries, according to the latest news update from city officials. 

Fire Marshal Perry Ebner said it is proving difficult to determine the cause of the fire, because so much of the building interior was destroyed.

“It’s difficult to get burn patterns or other telltale signs,” he said. 

Beek’s neighbor, the Minneapolis Counseling Clinic, is closed by order of the fire department.

Another neighbor, the Blue Cross Animal Hospital, evacuated all of the animals on the night of the fire, and closed for one day as a precaution. Practice Manager Vikki Johnson said they often ordered Beek’s Pizza for their staff meetings, and they feel for Bill Graham of Diamond Lake Rental. Graham is involved in the community, she said, and donates a bounce house for local events. 

 Graham and the owners of Beek’s Pizza could not be reached for comment. 

Beek’s Pizza was a favorite place for many in the area. 

“It was the neighborhood pizza joint,” said  Erik Lundegaard.  “… We could walk to Beek’s. Through the window behind the counter, you could see them flipping the dough in the air and putting the pizza in the oven. I liked the high-backed booths, too, and the taste of the pizza.”

Rick Sewall said Beek’s was one of two places he ordered pizza from in the area.  “I hope they can reopen. Loved their thin crust with sausage and green and black olives,” he said.
