BRYN MAWR

Joint LRT statement discussed

The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association Board of Directors discussed a joint statement from several other neighborhood boards on the proposed Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) line, but the organizations hasn’t added its signature to the document, yet.

The statement on goals for the design of the line and the mitigation of traffic, safety and environmental concerns has the support of the CIDNA, Kenwood, Lowry Hill and West Calhoun neighborhood organizations. The document acknowledges the 15-mile LRT line connecting Minneapolis and Eden Prairie “will benefit many communities it serves” but calls for more than one dozen specific mitigation steps that attempt to minimize potential impacts of increased noise and traffic disruption.

Comments from Bryn Mawr board members indicated there was support for the document’s goals, but that it would take further review before the neighborhood would lend its official support to the document.

The text of the statement is posted on the West Calhoun Neighborhood Council website at westcalhoun.org/hot-topics.html.

Whittier

Board supports crime prevention specialist

The Board of Directors of the Whittier Alliance voted to express its support for the neighborhood’s crime prevention specialist, whose position is imperiled by the proposed 2012 city budget.

Mayor R.T. Rybak’s 2012 budget proposal includes a 1.3-percent reduction in Police Department funding which may force layoffs of the civilian crime prevention specialists who work as neighborhood liaisons. Chelsea Adams is the 5th Precinct crime prevention specialist who works most closely with Whittier.

The resolution approved by the board was first passed unanimously by the neighborhood’s Community Issues Committee. The language of resolution notes Adams’ “invaluable service” and adds that the neighborhood “supports the retention of current crime prevention specialist positions in the 2012 budget.”

Board supports tortilla factory expansion

The Whittier Alliance Board of Directors voted to support the expansion by up to 4,000 square feet of an existing tortilla factory at 2750 Nicollet Ave.

The board voted to support the property owner’s request for the conditional use permit to allow limited production processing and a variance to expand the production area to 4,000 square feet from 1,500 square feet. The factory currently employs 20 people and the expansion is expected to create eight additional jobs.
