One injured following Thursday morning shooting in Whittier

WHITTIER — A 24-year-old man was left injured after a shooting early Thursday outside the Park Square Condominiums, 2930 Blaisdell Ave. S.

Jesse Oyervides, building manager at Park Square, said he received a call from one of the roughly 250 residents at Park Square around 3 in the morning informing him a shooting had occurred in the building’s parking lot.

Oyervides said the resident saw a group of people calmly walking away from Park Square toward Lake St. after the shooting, though the resident wasn’t able to provide detailed suspect descriptions.

Sgt. William Palmer, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department, said the victim sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his extremities and was transported to Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

Palmer said police have very little information about suspects at this point in the investigation. No arrest has yet been made in connection with the incident.

Jen Wendland, community organizer for the Whittier Alliance, said Thursday morning’s shooting is the fourth in Whittier this year.

Oyervides, building manager since the late 90s, said there is no precedent for this sort of violence at Park Square.

“This building has been here 30 years, and we’ve never had a shooting,” he said. “That’s a strange thing."
