Alert issued about open-window burglaries

The city is advising 5th Precinct residents to pin or lock their windows following an uptick in the number of open-window burglaries this summer.

During the break-ins, screens are cut from open windows. In some cases, the suspect never even enters the home but instead takes small electronics, purses, wallets and other items within arm’s reach of the window.

Amy Lavender, crime prevention specialist for the Minneapolis Police Department’s 5th Precinct, said the incidents have been taking place throughout the city.
