Board approves LRT resolution

A resolution calling on regional elected officials to “demand the highest design standards and most effective mitigation practices” of a proposed light rail transit project was approved Feb. 7 by the Kenwood Isles Area Association (KIAA).

The document outlined general goals for the Southwest Light Rail Transit project, which is intended to connect Eden Prairie and Downtown Minneapolis. The rail line would run through the Kenwood, Cedar-Isles-Dean, West Calhoun and Lowry Hill neighborhoods in the Kenilworth Corridor, which now carries a freight rail line and biking and walking paths.

The resolution, jointly drafted by representatives of those four neighborhoods, included four general goals for the project: maintaining “livable communities”; ensuring safe use of parks and trails; protecting green space; and improving traffic and congestion. The other neighborhood boards were expected to approve the resolution, as well.

Board supports Bennett Lumber East rezoning

The Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) Board of Directors voted 6–4 Jan. 19 in support of rezoning a parcel near the Midtown Greenway to allow for construction of a six-story, 223-unit apartment building.

Plans for the apartment building on the Bennett Lumber East site, between Colfax and Dupont avenues, would require the property to be rezoned to R-6 from R-5. The LHENA Board also approved development plans for the site despite concerns expressed by some neighbors over the height and density of the project.

In voting to approve the project, the Board noted that it did not intend to set the precedent that other parcels along the Midtown Greenway be rezoned to allow for taller, denser development.

Track 29 development meets disapproval

LHENA Board members cited concerns over the design, quality of materials and height of the proposed Track 29 Apartments in voting not to support the project Jan. 19.

The Board suggested more community input was needed before 198-unit development on the Midtown Greenway goes forward.

‘Stopgap’ funding move approved

The LHENA Board of Director approved a Neighborhood Revitalization Program plan modification to redirect $20,000 in program income to neighborhood administrative and staffing costs.

The funds were previously loaned out through the LHENA home improvement loan program and repaid. In approving the move, the Board noted it was a “stopgap” measure and not a permanent solution to funding neighborhood staff.
