District, teachers reach contract agreement

Minneapolis Public Schools and the union representing its teachers reached a “tentative agreement” on a new contract, the district announced Dec. 28.

Details of the new 2009–2011 contract will be announced sometime after Jan. 3, when students and teachers return from winter break, the district reported. Both the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and School Board must vote to ratify the contract before it takes effect.

It was almost one year ago that the district paid an $800,000 fine for missing the state-imposed deadline to settle contract negotiations with teachers.
