Fire in Whittier apartment building displaces 79 residents

A fire at an apartment building in the Whittier neighborhood Wednesday night has displaced 79 residents, although none of them were injured.

The fire started around 7 p.m. at the three-story building at 2609 Blaisdell Ave. S., according to a Minneapolis Fire Department press release. The fire was limited to the roof area and all residents were evacuated. Water from firefighting damaged the rest of the building, according to the release.

Fire crews cleared the scene around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Red Cross is helping the buildings residents; 33 of them are children.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation. None of the 50 firefighters who responded to the blaze were injured.

Smoke detectors were sounding in the building, according to the release.
