Wrecking crews this week demolished the former Rex Hardware building at 2601 Lyndale Ave. S.
The demolition comes eleven weeks after the Minneapolis City Council overturned a Heritage Preservation Commission ruling stating the building is a historic landmark. It was a hardware store from 1914 to 2005.
The owner of the site, SMJ Investments LLC, got permits in 2007 to construct a 16-unit condominium and retail building. The housing market crashed and the company’s financing fell apart.
Machelle Norling of SMJ said today the company has no immediate plans for construction.
