LHENA hires new newspaper editor
Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association hired a new editor for its monthly newspaper, The Wedge.
Wedge resident Quentin Skinner took over with the July issues of The Wedge. Best known as the theater critic for City Pages, Skinner also has written two novels set in the Wedge, where he has lived for 15 years, according to an announcement posted Aug. 2 on thewedge.org.
Rex Hardware demolished
Wrecking crews in early August demolished the former Rex Hardware building at 2601 Lyndale Ave. S.
The demolition came 11 weeks after the Minneapolis City Council overturned a Heritage Preservation Commission ruling stating the building is a historic landmark. It was a hardware store from 1914 to 2005.
The owner of the site, SMJ Investments LLC, obtained permits in 2007 to construct a 16-unit condominium and retail building. The housing market crashed and the company’s financing fell apart.
Machelle Norling of SMJ said Aug. 11 that the company has no immediate plans for construction.
Fitness classes offered at Lyndale Farmstead Park
The Volunteers of America Southwest Senior Center, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and Minneapolis Community Education Board are sponsoring classes for people 50 and older to get their body and brain into gear.
The classes will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13–17 and Oct. 4–8 at the Lyndale Farmstead Park, 3900 Bryant Ave. S. Each session cost $35.

Catch a movie and eat ice cream at Windom Park
The Windom Community Council on Aug. 26 is hosting a Movie Night and Ice Cream Social at 7:30 p.m. in Windom Park.
The featured movie to be played at dusk is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
There will also be free root beer floats, a raffle, neighborhood history books, face painting and concession stand treats.
The Center for Energy and Environment will be on hand to give residents information on upcoming workshops for an energy program in Windom.
Annual Labor Day Parade and Party
The parade will feature the Southwest High Marching Band. It runs 3–6 p.m. on Sept. 6 and will be followed by games, potluck and bingo. It’s free for all East Calhoun residents.
A yoga gathering for moms
Sarah Longacre of Blooma, a prenatal and postnatal yoga studio and wellness center in Edina, is organizing a yoga event for moms at the Lake Harriet Bandshell on Aug. 28.
Dubbed “Bellyrama,” the yoga gathering is a celebration of motherhood.
When asked what inspired the idea for the event, Longacre said: “For me it is what would happen if we could get mothers, whether you’re pregnant or not, all standing on their mats together — looking in one another’s eyes and just honoring and being present with that sensation that we’re all moms and we’re in this together.”
The event will give moms and moms-to-be a chance to take time to care for themselves and realize there’s a whole community out there they can draw strength and support from.
The benefits of doing yoga during a pregnancy and post-pregnancy are many, including decreased blood pressure, notes Longacre.
“For prenatal [women], it’s by far the best form of exercise,” she said.
About 70 percent of the women who go to Blooma, 3919 44th St., are new to yoga. Besides yoga classes, the studio offers wellness services, childbirth education and supportive community for families.
