A 26-year-old Minneapolis man drowned early this morning while he and three friends attempted to swim from shore to an island, according to a Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office news release.
While the friends swam to the island around 5 a.m., the victim told them he didn’t want to complete the swim and would instead return to shore, according to the release. When the friends returned to shore, they realized the man was missing and called 911.
Minneapolis Police responded, searching the scene. A Sheriff’s Office dive team arrived and, around 9:30 a.m., pulled the man’s body from the water, about 60 feet from shore in seven feet of water, according to the release.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office said the man’s name will be released later today.
