Minneapolis residents looking to close their neighborhood street for a National Night Out event have through July 21 to do so for free.
Registering an event for Minneapolis National Night Out (NNO), scheduled for Aug. 3, is free, but the permit required to block off a street costs $100 starting July 22. Permission is still required by 75 percent of neighbors for the street closure to be approved.
Street closure is not required for a registered NNO event.
Designed to raise local crime awareness, National Night Out asks neighborhoods to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships through block parties, cookouts, and other social events.
In its 27th year, NNO has a focus to create relationships between neighbors that would result in strengthened block clubs, or groups of neighbors who watch for and report crime or suspicious activity in their community.
