Grant will fund chimney swift tower
The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) Board of Directors voted June 9 to accept a $700 grant from Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis to construct a chimney swift tower in JD Rivers’ Children’s Garden in Theodore Wirth Park.
The tower will provide a nesting area for chimney swifts, a native bird that is in decline due to loss of habitat. The grant will pay for Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board staff to build the tower.
The BMNA Board agreed to donate up to $150 for an information kiosk to accompany the tower.

Donation to fund Kenwood school project
A $2,000 donation from the Kenwood Isles Area Association (KIAA) will partially fund the second phase of an environmental improvement project at Kenwood Community School, 2013 Penn Ave. S.
The KIAA Board of Directors voted June 7 to make the contribution to a project that aims to replace a chain link fence surrounding the school playground, add a student garden and add a brick pillar to one corner of the playground. A previous phase of the project replaced chain link fencing and added another brick pillar.
The total cost of phase two of the project was estimated at nearly $40,000. Sales of engraved bricks, to be installed in the pillars, also support the project.
The July 5 KIAA meeting was rescheduled to the following Monday, July 12, because of the Fourth of July holiday.
Blackbird Café requests parking variance
A public hearing is scheduled for July 1 at 4:30 p.m. in room 317 of City Hall, 350 S. 5th St., to discuss Blackbird Café’s application for a variance to reduce parking spaces at its new site. The restaurant, which lost its original space at 50th Street and Bryant Avenue to a fire in February, is moving this fall to a new space at 38th Street and Nicollet Avenue. It is seeking a reduction in parking spaces from five to zero.
The Kingfield Neighborhood Association board voted to support the variance request. The public hearing will take place before the Minneapolis Zoning Board of Adjustment.
The Lyndale Neighborhood Association’s annual meeting is set for June 28, from 6–7 p.m. at Painter Park, 620 34th St. W. The meeting will include board elections, a year-in-review, presentations of the Lyndale Community Service Award, and the neighborhood’s annual dessert contest.
Live music from Al’s Roackabilly Quartet will follow from 7–9 p.m. Go to lyndale.org for more details.
