Man, 27, drowns in Lake Calhoun

A 27-year-old Brooklyn Center man drowned while swimming Friday night in Lake Calhoun, according to authorities.

Orlando Burgos was swimming with a friend at 9:11 p.m. at Thomas Beach when his friend noticed he went under and didn’t resurface, said Lisa Kiava, spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Burgos’s friend and others tried to find him and called for help. Responders from the Minneapolis Fire Department found him in six feet of water. He was given CPR and taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:56 p.m.

The death was accidental, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. Kiava said the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the drowning.
