Man shot, killed near Lake Calhoun

WEST CALHOUN — A man shot to death near Lake Calhoun was a 20-year-old Brooklyn Park resident, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office reported.

Derrick Gregory Martin was found at about 11 p.m. May 24 in parkland off of West Calhoun Parkway between West 32nd Street and Dean Parkway. Martin died at the scene of a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to a press release from the examiner’s office.

Captain Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department said the man was not randomly targeted and was involved in an “ongoing dispute” between two rival groups involved in past episodes of violence. Huffman would not say if Martin was a gang member.

Officers from both the Fifth Precinct and Park Police responded to a report of shots fired near 3150 West Lake Calhoun Parkway at about 10:15 p.m. May 24. They found bullet holes in the windows of an apartment on the 3100 block of the parkway.

Huffman did not know whether the apartment where bullet holes were found was occupied at the time of the shooting, but she said no one in the apartment was injured.

Martin’s body was found by police about 45 minutes after officers responded to the shots-fired call. Emergency crews responded, but Martin was declared dead at the scene.

A number of uninvolved bystanders were using the park and trail at the time of the incident and cooperated with investigators, Huffman said.

“As is often the case in ongoing dispute issues, the folks we really need cooperation from are the combatants, as it were, from either side, which is a much more difficult issue,” she added.

The shooting remained under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Homicide Unit. No suspects were reported in custody.

Police asked anyone with information on the shooting to call the TIPS line at 692-TIPS (692-8744).
