CARAG

Bike fest may require earlier road closures

The CARAG Board of Directors approved a motion in support of earlier road closure times when the Nature Valley Bicycle Festival returns to Uptown June 18.

Event organizers may seek city approval to close sections of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street at 5:45 p.m., 15 minutes earlier than last year. The earlier closure would allow more time for pre-race events, including a children’s race, said Uptown Association President Thatcher Imboden, who has been working with race organizers.

Road closures on residential streets along the racecourse would occur even earlier in the day, Imboden added.

THE WEDGE

Bike boulevard parking impact questioned

While supportive of plans for a Bryant Avenue “bicycle boulevard,” members of the Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) Board of Directors expressed concern too little had been done to alert area residents to potential parking impacts.

The Board in March approved a motion that requested city officials improve their efforts to notify Bryant Avenue residents that some changes could reduce on-street parking options. Several options intended to make the street more bicycle-friendly, such as installing chicanes that narrow the roadway, would require some parking spots to be removed.

A final plan for the bike boulevard had yet to be approved in March.
