Squad car slams into Lake Street restaurant

A Minneapolis police car on its way to a burglary-in-progress at Ellwood Automotive, 3948 Nicollet Ave., crashed into Delights of India, 1123 W. Lake St., around 5 a.m. today, damaging the doorway, a window and a wall.

The squad, which had its lights on according to witness reports, was eastbound on Lake Street when a civilian car traveling south on Emerson Avenue slid through an intersection, hit the squad and pushed it into the building, said Minneapolis Police Department spokesman Sgt. William Palmer.

The officer, Jonahs Novak of the 5th Precinct, sustained minor injuries, was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment and released. No other injuries were reported.

Bal Arora, who has owned Delights of India since 1984, said his tenant in an apartment above the restaurant called to tell him about the accident.

“When I came there were eight, nine squad cars and state troopers there,” he said.

He said the city boarded the building, but it was still plenty drafty and he was waiting for his insurance company to assess the damage. He said it would likely be closed for a couple days or more while repairs are made.

“I’m more worried about the structure,” he said. “Maybe it’s not safe to have people here.”
