Neighborhood notebook: Kenilworth Corridor

Light rail on Kenilworth Corridor looks likely

It appeared all but certain in October that a light rail line connecting Downtown with the southwest suburbs would run down the Kenilworth Corridor and not the Midtown Greenway through Uptown.

The Southwest Policy Advisory Committee (PAC), a group of city and county government officials, recommended the Kenilworth Corridor route that snakes between Cedar Lake and Lake of the Isles at their meeting Oct. 14. The vote meant route 3A cleared one of its final hurdles on the way to the Metropolitan Council, which makes a final recommendation on light rail in November.

City Council Member Ralph Remington (10th Ward) was the only PAC representative to vote in favor of route 3C through Uptown on the Midtown Greenway. Late this summer, cost estimates that strongly favored 3A made it seem unlikely 3C would win federal funding.

One amendment to the PAC resolution called for continued exploration of rail transit down the Midtown Greenway. A streetcar connecting the Southwest and Hiawatha light rail lines is one possibility with strong support.

Other amendments addressed the need to reroute freight rail and preserve bicycle and pedestrian trails along the recommended route.

KINGFIELD

Groundbreaking set for affordable housing

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Nicollet Square affordable housing development for youth and young adults is set for Nov. 12, from 4:30–6 p.m. at 37th Street and Nicollet Avenue. Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation is developing the project, which initially stirred controversy in the neighborhood because of its size, design and concerns about traffic and crime. The 42-unit building will offer social services for homeless and at-risk youth and young adults.
