THE WEDGE — Soo Visual Arts Center is hosting a “fire sale” fundraiser through September to make up a budget shortfall brought on by the recession.
Executive Director Suzy Greenberg donated her own artwork produced over the last two decades to the fundraiser. Proceeds from art sales will go toward the gallery’s general operating budget.
Greenberg opened the non-profit arts exhibition space, known as SooVAC, in 2001.
Gallery Manager Alison Hiltner said the gallery was “not closing the door tomorrow,” but acknowledged SooVAC had struggled in the recession. Both purchases at the gallery and donations have dropped off, Hiltner said.
“We have to do better,” she said.
The gallery recently reduced its staff from three positions to two, Hiltner added.
