LINDEN HILLS

ELECTION GRIEVANCE: The Linden Hills Neighborhood Council (LHiNC) discussed a grievance about the October board elections at its December meeting. Debbie Evans, a former LHiNC board member and candidate in the recent election, filed the grievance, which alleged that some aspects of the election — such as the use of absentee ballots — violated the neighborhood group’s by-laws. Most LHiNC board members felt that the election was flawed according to the bylaws, but argued that those rules were outdated and the intent of the process was in line with LHiNC’s mission. A formal, written response to the grievance will be presented at the January board meeting.

LOWRY HILL

CONSERVATION DISTRICT: After witnessing the prolonged fight to save the 107-year-old building at 1900 Colfax Ave., City Council Member Lisa Goodman (7th Ward) told the Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association board that some sort of historical designation might benefit the neighborhood. Goodman repeatedly stressed that she would not embrace any designation that embroiled residents in red tape every time they wanted to renovate or add on to their homes. "This would just mean that the assumption is that you can’t tear the house down rather than the assumption being that you can tear it down," said Goodman.

Goodman cautioned that these discussions are in the very preliminary stages. She said that the process wouldn’t require community input for at least another year. The council member also stated that any plan would need approval from 75 percent of homeowners in Lowry Hill to be ratified.

WINTER SOLSTICE PARTY: The Kenwood Isles Deli and BirchBark Books and Native Arts are staying open late to host a solstice party on Dec. 21 from 4–7 p.m.

Local poet and author Robert Bly will kick off the festivities with a reading. Minneapolis singer Marion Moore will provide music.

BRYN MAWR

NRP ELECTORS: The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) selected an elector and elector alternate to the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) Policy Board at the Nov. 12 Board of Directors meeting.

BMNA Co-Treasurer Ron Sterbenz was elector, and the other co-treasurer, Chad Smude, was his alternate. Neighborhood electors selected the NRP Policy Board Nov. 20.

EAST ISLES

LAKE OF THE ISLES: The East Isles Residents Association (EIRA) approved a resolution to join an ad hoc committee with other neighborhoods that would advise on completion of the Lake of the Isles renovation.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board began the project in 2000, but neighbors have been disappointed with some aspects of the renovation.

A similar resolution was passed by the Kenwood Isles Area Association in November, and will be brought to other lake-area neighborhoods.

KINGFIELD

FARMERS’ MARKET FREE: Board voted to allow the Kingfield Farmers’ Market to separate from the neighborhood organization and function independently. The decision came after several months of debate over the process, as well as concerns from some board members that the market would not be able to sustain itself.

The board will vote at a future meeting on whether to give or loan the market seed money to get started.

The change likely won’t be noticeable. The market plans to continue in its current location, at 43rd Street & Nicollet Avenue, will keep its logo, and will continue to have a relationship with the Kingfield board and
organization.

NEW OLD MEMBER: Board approved Arthur Knowles as a new board member to replace a member who resigned because he moved out of the neighborhood. Knowles was then appointed as the board’s vice president. Knowles has been on and off the Kingfield board for more than a decade.

LOWRY HILL

WINTER SOLSTICE PARTY GOES PUBLIC: After hosting winter solstice bonfires in their backyard for the past 20 years, Jim Lenfestey and his wife are finally ready to pass the torch.

Lenfestey has asked board Vice President Beth Kehoe if she might want to help take the party public. Kehoe reported that the owners of the Kenwood Isles Deli and BirchBark Books and Native Arts are excited about hosting the event. The board agreed to provide up to $400 to pay for the deli and bookstore staff overtime.

The party is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 4–7 p.m. Residents from Lowry Hill, Kenwood, East Isles and Cedar Isles Dean neighborhoods are invited.

Lenfestey is very pleased that the tradition will continue. “The solstice is the oldest ritual in human consciousness. It’s the fulcrum between hope and fear, watching the sun go down and hoping it will rise again,” he said.

THOMAS LOWRY PARK: The Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association (LHNA) board passed a resolution at its November meeting to “partner with Friends of Thomas Lowry Park (FTLP), Tangletown Gardens, and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board on Thomas Lowry Park (TLP) improvements and stewardship efforts and apply its communication and membership infrastructure to promote community participation.”

Neighborhood residents Barb and Jimmy Fogel are founding members of the nonprofit FTLP and have been working largely unaided to enhance the plantings and maintenance that the Park Board provides for the park. The Fogels approached the board to ask for help in finding more volunteers. They were also looking for money to help pay for the park’s revitalization.

The Fogels had developed a relationship with Tangletown Garden owners Dean Engelmann and Scott Endres who offered to match community-donated plantings and labor.

STEVENS SQUARE

FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT GRANTS: The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) board of directors approved a neighborhood façade improvement grant program.

The program provides matching grants of up to $5,000 for façade improvements to retail space along Nicollet Avenue. SSCO Executive Director Steve Gallagher will administer the program.

NRP ELECTOR: The SSCO selected former board member Jay Damberg to serve as its elector for the NRP Policy Board.

THE WEDGE

RESTAURANT MAY HOST WINE TASTING: Future occupants of the former Campiello restaurant, 1320 Hennepin Ave. S., may take over the annual wine-tasting hosted in that space.

The Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) Board passed a motion approving plans for a new restaurant, which was scheduled to open Feb. 1. The owners said they were considering a plan to host the wine tasting, which was a major annual fundraiser for area neighborhood organizations.
