Cyclists to ‘take back the Greenway’ Saturday

Bicyclists concerned about a recent rash of robberies along the Midtown Greenway bike route plan to ride the path en masse Saturday evening in an attempt to reclaim it.

A group called Minneapolis Bike Love organized the ride, called Take Back the Greenway. Though numerous robberies – all of which have involved the assault of moving cyclists – were reported in recent months, almost all of them happened east of Interstate 35W.

For November, Minneapolis police only have one incident in the 5th Precinct portion of the Greenway on record, said Crime Prevention Specialist Chelsea Adams. But it’s possible some robberies have gone unreported, she said.

The Greenway runs in what used to be a railroad trench extending from west of Lake Calhoun to the Mississippi River.

Saturday’s ride is open to anyone. It begins at 4 p.m. at the Greenway entrance near the Calhoun Beach Club apartments and ends at Grumpy’s Bar & Grill downtown.
