ARMATAGE

BULBS GALORE: In preparation for the annual neighborhood festival and this year’s drive to sign up people for the Minnesota Energy Challenge, neighborhood coordinator Jennifer Swanson contacted Xcel Energy to see if she could get a light-bulb donation.

She was successful, receiving more than 300 bulbs a week after making
her request. The donation amounted to more than $700.

Each resident who signs up for the challenge receives a bulb.

The Armatage Neighborhood Summer Festival will be 6–8:30 p.m. July 22 at Armatage Park.

TANGLETOWN

ELECTIONS: The Tangletown Neighborhood Association held officer elections at its June 16 meeting. The new president and vice president are Ryan Fisher and Mary Jane Mitchell, respectively. Jerry Doyle and Mary Davidson will continue as treasurer and secretary, respectively.

FOURTH OF JULY: The neighborhood association still is seeking volunteers to help out at the neighborhood’s Fourth of July celebration. The earliest shifts would start around 8:30 a.m.; the latest would end sometime after 1 p.m. The more volunteers that apply, the shorter the shifts will be.

Call the association at 952-886-3303, or e-mail info@tangletown.org.

THE WEDGE

TRAFFIC LIGHT TO STAY: A motion in support of keeping a stoplight at the intersection of Dupont Avenue and West 24th Street was approved by the Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) Board of Directors.

Council Member Ralph Remington (10th Ward) said several residents of The Wedge had asked him about removing the stoplight. They argued the energy used by the light and its environmental impact outweighed the need for a stoplight at the intersection, Remington said.

Several neighborhood residents expressed strong opposition to its removal over safety concerns at the intersection. Remington agreed not to pursue its removal.

BOARD ELECTIONS: Peter Sukki Kim was elected LHENA board president. Caprice Bart will serve as vice president and new board member Ryan Wilson will serve as treasurer.

KENWOOD

ELECTIONS: Mike Bono replaced Gary Bennett as chair of the Kenwood Isles Area Association (KIAA) Board of Directors following officer elections in June.

Bennett did not run for re-election.

Pat Scott was re-elected vice chair, and Roy Williams was re-elected treasurer. The KIAA Board of Directors had yet to find a permanent replacement for the secretary position recently vacated by former Board Member Kathy Williams.

LINDEN HILLS

CVS: The Linden Hills Neighborhood Council (LHiNC) at its June 3 meeting hosted Velmeir Companies attorney Brian Alton and project manager Kevin McGhee to discuss a proposed CVS/pharmacy planned for Sunnyside and France avenues.

Alton and McGhee presented the latest plans for the pharmacy building, the look of which has had neighbors concerned, especially over how it will fit into the overall appearance of Linden Hills.

David Jones, a LHiNC board member, said he accepted that the community probably would not be able to stop the building from being constructed — but he still wasn’t happy with how the CVS would compare to ones found in surrounding suburbs.

“It’s the same, the same shape, the same everything,” Jones said. “The only thing that’s different is the color.

“It’s a barn. It’s a big barn.”

McGhee countered that he felt there wasn’t enough guidance from the community. “We could use a bit more direction,” he said. “To sit here and talk, that doesn’t really help us.”

LHiNC chairwoman Linea Palmisano said she would organize a future meeting between Linden Hills residents and Velmeir representatives. That won’t be for at least a month, she said.

LOWRY HILL

BOARD ELECTIONS: Lowry Hill residents elected Brian Meeker, Maggie Zawasky, Anita Tabb, and Brian Austin to the board at LHNA’s annual meeting on May 20. Residents re-elected Craig Wilson to the board. Sara Peterman, Steve Gudeman, and David Graham declined to run for additional terms.

LHNA OFFICERS: The board elected Craig Wilson, Beth Kehoe and Brian Hols to second terms as president, vice president and treasurer, respectively. Maggie Zawasky took retiring board member, Sara Peterman’s, place as secretary.

PEOPLE FOR PARKS: Jeff Winters from People for Parks talked to the board about his organization’s revival. People for Parks was created in 1978 to help combat Dutch elm disease in Minneapolis, after a period of quiescent, the organization is again actively working with the Minneapolis Park Board to improve the Minneapolis park system.

COMPANY’S COMING: Minneapolis has launched a campaign to clean up the city in time for the Republican National Convention. The campaign, called Company’s Coming, will provide graffiti removal kits, painting kits, or trash pick up kits to any group that wants to help beautify Minneapolis prior to the Republican National Convention in September.

SUMMER HIATUS: Committees will continue to meet over the summer, but the board will not meet in July or August. The next board meeting will be Sept. 9, the second Tuesday of the month, to avoid conflicting with the Labor Day and the start of the school year.

ARMATAGE

NEW SIGNS: The Armatage Neighborhood Association at their May 20 meeting voted to pay about $1,100 to order 30 new signs to be placed around the neighborhood.

The signs will feature the neighborhood’s new logo and are meant to identify the area. Several board members said they would like to list the neighborhood’s website.

EAST HARRIET

LIQUOR LICENSE HEARING: A public hearing about a wine and beer license application from new restaurant Café Agri at 43rd Street and Bryant Avenue is set for June 4, from 6 p.m.–7 p.m. at the Lyndale Farmstead Park building, 39th Street and Bryant.

FULTON

WHEN NEIGHBORHOODS COMBINE: At the May 14 Fulton Neighborhood Association meeting, Vice President John Finlayson said he’s been in discussions with other neighborhood associations in the 13th Ward about creating a ward-wide board.

He said it wouldn’t be a group that would meet often; rather, it occasionally would bring together neighborhood leaders to discuss and share advice on issues that universally affect the ward.

“We’ve all got 15-plus years of experience doing projects,” Finlayson said, “so why reinvent the wheel?”

KINGFIELD

CRIME AND SAFETY: The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) voted at its May meeting to make its temporary Crime Prevention and Safety (CPaS) Task Force a permanent committee. The group also voted to start a block club task force to improve community connections.

LYNDALE

FISH FEST: The Lyndale Neighborhood Association’s (LNA) annual Fish Fest is set for June 14 from 5:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m. at Garfield Aquarium, 33rd Street and Nicollet Avenue. The event will feature food, live music and a puppet show.

STRATEGIC PLANNING: LNA is working on a strategic plan to create a vision for the neighborhood and is looking for feedback from residents on the neighborhood group’s work. An online survey can be found at lyndale.org.

STEVENS SQUARE

FARMERS MARKET: The Stevens Square Community Organization Board of Directors in May granted approval for a farmers market in the Plymouth Congregational Church parking lot, 1900 Nicollet Ave. S.

The farmers market will be open 4 p.m.–7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning in July. After September, the hours will be cut back to 4 p.m.–6 p.m.

TANGLETOWN

CREEKSIDE COMMONS: At their annual meeting May 19, the Tangletown Neighborhood Association voted 8-1 to not send a letter in support of the Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation’s Creekside Commons project.

The association had been asked by the neighborhood foundation to write a letter that would be used to help raise money for the $8 million affordable housing complex proposed for the corner of 54th Street and Stevens Avenue.

Association members at the meeting said they reluctantly had approved the project to begin with; writing a letter to help the project move forward was a step most did not want to take.

“There’s a huge number of us who totally oppose it,” said Woody Dixon, who later in the meeting was approved as a new board member.

BOARD ELECTIONS: Also at their annual meeting, the Tangletown Neighborhood Association voted to add two new members.

Woody Dixon and Curt Kellett received unanimous support. They begin their duties at the June 16 neighborhood meeting.

Joe Thiegs and Andrew Hedden are leaving the board.

WHITTIER

OPEN BOARD SEAT: Those seeking appointment to an open seat on the Whittier Alliance Executive Committee can make their case at the June Community Issues meeting.

The Executive Committee may appoint one of the candidates, who will serve through 2011, at their June 26 meeting. Candidates are not required to appear at the Community Issues meeting to be considered for appointment.

The Community Issues meeting is 6 p.m.–8:30 p.m. June 9 at Whittier International Elementary School, 315 W. 26th St.

UPTOWN

COMMUNITY WINE TASTING: The 26th annual Uptown Community Wine Tasting Benefit on June 11 will feature more than 400 varieties of wine and has raised more than $250,000 for Southwest neighborhoods since it began. Tickets are $30 at the door and $25 in advance and can be purchased from participating neighborhood organizations. The following neighborhoods are involved: CARAG, Cedar Isles Dan, East Calhoun, East Isles, Lowry Hill East, Lowry Hill, Lyndale, Kenwood and Whittier. All proceeds go to the neighborhood groups. The event will be held in the parking lot behind Campiello, 1320 W. Lake St., from 5–9 p.m.
