EAST ISLES
BOARD ELECTIONS: Five new members were elected to the East Isles Residents Association (EIRA) Board at the annual neighborhood meeting in April.
Rosita Acosta, Peter Levine, Karen Carney, Michael T’Kach and Rose Mathys were unanimously elected to fill five seats left vacant by departing board members. Ross D’Emanuele was re-elected board president and Kate Lynch was elected board vice president.

KENWOOD
BOARD ELECTIONS: A new board was elected at the Kenwood Isles Area Association (KIAA) Board meeting in May.
New board members were Terry
Campbell, Jeanette Colby and Sanja deGarmo. Re-elected board members were Gary Bennett, Michael Bono, Bruce Camp, Ellen Doll, Joe Gibbons, Eric Lind, Ron Lotz, Katherine Low, Amy Lucas, Ed Pluimer, Pat Scott and Roy Williams.
All board members serve one-year terms.

LINDEN HILLS
MEETING ON PROPOSED CVS: A second community meeting will be held to discuss the CVS/pharmacy planned for Sunnyside & France avenues. About 140 Southwest residents came to a similar meeting April 8. The planned pharmacy would replace the defunct Almsted’s
Sunnyside Market and a gas station on two parcels of land totaling nearly 1.5 acres. Most participants at the previous meeting were generally not in favor of the project.

LOWRY HILL
KENWOOD SUMMER BATHROOM HOURS: At its May 6 meeting, the Lowry Hill Neighborhood Association (LHNA) board approved a $250 donation to help keep the Kenwood Recreation Center bathrooms open during the weekend. The center closes at 6 p.m. Friday night and doesn’t reopen until Monday at 9 a.m. Recreation Center president Maggie Mercil’s budget can’t cover staff time to open and close the bathrooms. Kenwood Isles Area Association and Twin Cities running group ClubRun have also agreed to donate.
BYLAWS CHANGES: The board agreed to accept new bylaws that reflect its decision to abolish its annual membership fee in favor of voluntary donations and to extend voting rights to each resident of Lowry Hill aged 16 and older.
Previously, votes were limited to one person per household, provided that person had paid his or her annual dues and was at least 18 years old.
ANNUAL MEETING: LHNA will hold its annual meeting on May 20 at the Walker Art Center Film Center. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.
The meeting will include an election for five board of director positions, the new LHNA website launch, and the results of the Hennepin and Lyndale Civic Corridor Design Charrette.

WHITTIER

NEW BOARD MEMBERS: Four new members were elected to the Whittier Alliance Board of Directors at the Whittier annual meeting April 3.
The new board members are Michaela Ahern, Christopher Gottshall, Christina Le and Maximo Mena.

At the first meeting of the new board, Erica Christ was re-elected president. Paula Horan was appointed to an open board seat and elected vice president.

SHELTER REQUEST DENIED: A request from Simpson Housing Services for support of a conditional-use permit to expand their Whittier shelter was denied by the board of directors.
Simpson planned to seek city permission to expand its 40-bed emergency men’s shelter at 2740 1st Ave. S. by 30 beds. Representatives from Simpson said they could no longer operate their women’s shelter at 1900 11th Ave. S. and needed to find room for the women in the Whittier shelter.

Opponents narrowly won a contentious vote, arguing Whittier already was home to a number of shelters and that other neighborhoods should share the burden.
