The City Council’s Transportation and Public Works Committee has approved the Public Works department’s recommendation to construct a bicycle station along the Midtown Greenway behind the Midtown Exchange at Lake Street. The full Council will vote on the initiative Dec. 21.
The 4,000-square-foot station would have bicycle storage space, bikes for sale and rent, a repair shop, and shower rooms for both genders. Freewheel Bike Shop at 1812 S. 6th St. would manage the station and offer membership packages.
The plan has been in the works since 2000, but the original size — 10,000 square feet — was too expensive. The new, smaller design would be built with a variety of funding sources, including $127,000 from the U of M Trail Project, $109,000 from the Hiawatha Trail Connections Project, $18,000 from the Midtown Greenway Coalition, and $75,000 from Allina Health Systems. If approved, construction would finish by March 31, 2008.
