City poised to secure federal dollars for key transportation projects

Federal lawmakers are on the verge of approving the Omnibus Appropriation Bill for the 2008 fiscal year, which would secure funding for several key transportation projects in the city.

According to state documents, $195 million would go toward the Interstate 35W Bridge reconstruction; $53.9 million would be allotted to the Northstar Rail Project, a 40-mile train line connecting Big Lake, Minn. with Downtown; and $10 million would go to the Central Corridor Light Rail project which will connect Downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul.

The bill would also reserve million of dollars for projects affecting Minneapolis, such as $564,000 for a gunfire detection system in the city, $295,320 to update the city’s sewer overflow system, and $178,600 for an automated criminal charging web application for prosecutors and law enforcement officials in Hennepin County.
