HIDDEN BEACH MEETING: Kenwood residents are invited to a meeting to discuss changes to East Cedar Lake Beach on Monday, Nov. 19.
Formerly known as Hidden Beach, the swimming spot was renamed and made an official city beach this summer to deter crime and after-hours partying. The meeting agenda includes a presentation on 2007 crime statistics, a discussion of recent changes to the beach and future plans for the area. Commissioner Tracy Nordstrom of the Minneapolis Park Board and Recreation Board will be on hand to answer questions. The meeting is 7 p.m.–8:30 p.m. at Kenwood Recreation Center, 2101 W. Franklin Ave.
DECK THE WALLS: The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) and Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) are hosting a fundraiser Dec. 8 for Walldogs on Nicollet, their joint mural project planned for next summer. The project will bring local and national artists and community members together July 24–27 to paint six to 10 murals along Nicollet Avenue from Lake Street to 46th Street.
The fundraiser will include performances from Omulu Capoeira Guanabara Group, Artistic Youth Ensembles of Minnesota, Young Dance and several other groups. A holiday art and craft fair will be on site and snacks and beverages will be a provided. A cash bar will also be available.
Attendees are asked to donate what they can.
The fundraiser will run from 4 p.m.–9 p.m. at the Center for Performing Arts, 3754 Pleasant Ave. S. For more information, check out www.walldogs.lyndale.org.
SECURITY CAMERAS: The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) Board voted to ask for a recommendation from Minneapolis police on a neighborhood security camera system.
A system to monitor Nicollet Avenue between Interstate 94 and West 22nd Street was under consideration by the SSCO safety committee. The SSCO board will ask for an official opinion from 5th Precinct police on whether to pursue funding for the system.
Several board members questioned whether cameras were an effective enough crime deterrent to justify their expense.
NRP: The SSCO board voted to find another purpose for Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds previously contracted to African American Family Services.
The organization failed to spend $30,000 contracted for neighborhood social service work several years ago.
The board also voted to create a task force to determine if the money should be redirected to Nicollet Avenue redevelopment or some other purpose.
CREEKSIDE COMMONS: Developers behind Creekside Commons, an affordable housing complex proposed for the corner of 54th Street and Stevens Avenue, went before the Planning Commission on Nov. 13. They applied for properties on 5400, 5404 and 5412 Stevens Avenue to be rezoned from R1 to R5; a conditional use permit for 30-units; a variance to reduce the number of off-street parking spaces from 29 to 27; a 17-foot setback variance along 54th Street from 21 feet; a 0-foot variance along Stevens Avenue from 15 feet; and to vacate a water main in an unused portion of Stevens Ave. At press time, the planning staff had recommended approving all of the requests, with certain conditions.
