STEVENS SQUARE

SECURITY CAMERAS: The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) Board voted to ask for a recommendation from Minneapolis police on a neighborhood security camera system.

A system to monitor Nicollet Avenue between Interstate 94 and West 22nd Street was under consideration by the SSCO safety committee. The SSCO board will ask for an official opinion from 5th Precinct police on whether to pursue funding for the system.

Several board members questioned whether cameras were an effective enough crime deterrent to justify their expense.

NRP: The SSCO board voted to find another purpose for Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds previously contracted to African American Family Services.

The organization failed to spend $30,000 contracted for neighborhood social service work several years ago.

The board also voted to create a task force to determine if the money should be redirected to Nicollet Avenue redevelopment or some other purpose.

TANGLETOWN

CREEKSIDE COMMONS: Developers behind Creekside Commons, an affordable housing complex proposed for the corner of 54th Street and Stevens Avenue, went before the Planning Commission on Nov. 13. ARMATAGE

VOTE ON BYLAWS: Armatage residents are invited to attend the Nov. 20 neighborhood association meeting to vote on changes made to the association’s bylaws. The amendments include extending term lengths for board members from one to two years, allowing board members to take actions without a meeting, and requiring each board member to serve on a standing committee and help with the annual festival.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS:
The board is planning to post a new policy on its website regarding financial contributions. The policy states that any organization attempting to ask for money from the board must submit its request in writing or e-mail by the second Tuesday of the month. The request will then be put on the next board meeting agenda, which usually occurs on the third Tuesday of the month.

LYNDALE

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: The Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) voted to submit comments to city leaders about the City Council-assembled Community Engagement Task Force’s draft report outlining the roles and funding of neighborhood, community and cultural groups as parts of the community engagement system. A draft of the LNA’s comments included criticisms of the task force’s report including its inability to "clearly articulate the central role neighborhood organizations play in engaging community members in Minneapolis." For more information, visit www.lyndale.org.

STREET LIGHTING: The LNA adopted a position against the city’s recently introduced street lighting policy draft. A statement covering the organization’s rationale for its position was to be sent to city leaders. Visit www.lyndale.org to view the neighborhood’s position.

TANGLETOWN

WATER TOWER: Public Works and the Park Board have decided not to endorse setting up water spigots or a sprinkler system around Washburn Water Tower, which was one of the proposed items included in the neighborhood association’s NPR Phase II budget. The board has reworded the item to be more vague, referencing a need for improvements rather than a specific watering plan.

CREEKSIDE COMMONS:
Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation, the nonprofit developer behind the 30-unit affordable housing complex proposed for 54th Street and Stevens Avenue is expected to go before the Planning Commission on Nov. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 317 of City Hall, 350 S. 5th St. The organization has asked for the area to be rezoned and for several variances, including parking.

THE WEDGE

NRP PLAN MODIFICATION: The Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) board approved modifications to its Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) plan to fund tree stump removal. The two modifications together reallocated $5,000 of NRP funds for tree stump removal near Mueller Park and on neighborhood boulevards, as well as spring tree planting. The funds were previously earmarked for Mueller Park renovations. There was no public comment on the changes at a hearing held before the board meeting.

MEETING CHANGE: The next LHENA board meeting was rescheduled from Wednesday, Nov. 21 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19 because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
