Anyone interested in commenting on the new I-35W bridge at a Municipal Consent public hearing on Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Thrivent Financial Auditorium, 625 4th Ave. S.
The hearing will take place during a special meeting of the City Council’s Transportation and Public Works Committee.
The proposed new bridge would include 10 lanes, with five going in each direction, including two that could be devoted to Bus Rapid Transit. The new bridge would also be capable of carrying a light-rail line.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation will ask the city for its approval of the project. This hearing will be one of the steps in that consent process.
State law asks Minneapolis to examine three components of the proposed project:
Capacity: the plan for the layout of the new bridge, including alignment and number of lanes.
Access: how the plan provides or maintains access to and from the freeway; and street or trail access in adjacent neighborhoods or under the bridge.
Right of Way: what property will need to be acquired and put in the public right of way to accommodate a new, larger bridge.
Minneapolis will have 90 days from the date of the hearing to review the proposal and submit a response to the Department of Transportation.
The city will be able to approve, disapprove or disapprove the layout with requests for changes. There are no other options available under state law.
